We love PowerPoint at BrightCarbon. It’s such a versatile application and can be used for so much more than ‘just’ designing presentations. You can create videos, printed collateral, interactive eLearning, animated GIFs and so much more. But did you know you can create games? We’ve built one for you, using VBA, and it’s free to download and adapt. You can also use our PowerPoint automation service to adapt it or develop something completely different.
Introducing the PowerPoint memory game
You’ve probably played this game as a kid. If you’re as old as I am, you might even have played it with physical cards! The objective is simple, turn two cards at a time to find a pair. If they don’t match, remember where they are and turn them back over.
Using just one PowerPoint slide and a splattering of VBA magic, we’ve built all the game logic for you so you can play the game and then adapt it to make it your own.
All you need to do is download the game, start the slide show and you’re off.
Making it your own
The second slide includes instructions on how to modify the game. You can rebrand it, change the pictures under the card faces and increase/decrease the number of cards you have on a slide. The VBA code is a little more complex to adapt so if you’d like us to help out with that, do contact us.
Check out out blog for more ways VBA can help you with your PowerPoint creativity and don’t miss out on our brilliant free BrightSlide add-in for PowerPoint, now available for Windows and Mac.
Troubleshooting
Microsoft continue to make Office more secure, which is great for protecting you but sometimes that means you need to jump through a few hoops to get things working. Here are a couple of the most common hoops you might experience.
Q: The game opens in PowerPoint but I don’t see the setup dialog when clicking “click to setup” and the game doesn’t appear to work. How do I fix this? A: It might be that your PowerPoint security settings are preventing the game from running. Click File / Options / TrustCenter / Trust Center Settings / Macro Settings and select “Disable all macros except digitally signed macros”.
Q: What should I do if I see a pink security message bar below the ribbon when opening the file? A: Install our Trust Publisher digital certificate and try again.
Though there are lots of ways photos can be edited, one of the most common things our clients want to do with an image is to isolate the subject by removing the background. There are an increasing number of ways to do this, some using clever AI. But which is the best? Let’s find out!
How do you make sure that your graphs and charts have consistent branding across Excel, PowerPoint and Word? Learn how to create and use custom templates that support your brand identity across Microsoft Office.
Unleash your creativity and use this simple technique to loop sequences of animations throughout a slide no matter how long or complex the sequence is!
Hello, I teach IT in a school for excluded children. Can I get the VBA code for the PPt memory game, please? It is the kind of thing my students would love to use. Many thanks, Paul.
Continuing on with the idea of helping teachers who are currently delivering online schooling, this is another great question I saw on Facebook. The question was how to create a memory game , or a game of concentration using Microsoft 365. There are quite a few third-party programs and apps which can create this type of game, but being the dedicated Microsofty I am, I figured that surely there was a way to create this using Microsoft PowerPoint. I ve created lots of fun games using Microsoft PowerPoint in the past (including a few I have already drafted to upload here at some stage), but the idea of creating a game of concentration where users can flip a card to see what is underneath and then try to locate the second identical card located somewhere else on the rest of the board took some deep thinking. This is the stuff that keeps me up at night.
Hello, I installed the BrightSlide add-in for PowerPoint, but it expired in August 2022. It seems that I can’t use the add-in because of this, as it doesn’t accept the validation certificate. Are you planning to update the file in the near future? I’m interested in exploring the add-in further to see if it’s suitable for the project assigned to me.
Hi Paulo – when did you install the file? If you perform a clean install there shouldn’t be any issues with the certificate. If you are still having issues please email brightslide at brightcarbon.com and someone will be able to provide technical support.
